The winner of the Third Thing Essay Contest is 15-year-old Angela from Florida! Angela won over the judges with an entry that combined humor, heart, and some cool pop culture references — everything from comics to Star Wars to Scrubs! Fanboy himself would be proud.

With 36 entries total, the prize for the contest is a cool new iPod shuffle. Angela chose one in green, and it’s on her way!

Here is the winning entry:

Fanboy doesn’t know it but what he wants more than anything in the world is a mentor. A Dr.Cox or an Obi-Wan (though in the case of Fanboy Professor Xavier would be more appropriate). Everyone that he meets he subconsciously files away as a potential mentor. And if they fail the test they go on The List.

Goth Girl is the closest thing that Fanboy has come to a mentor. She is unconventional, yes, but she still takes care of him. She makes him happy, and yet still manages to keep him in line.

Fanboy tells us two of three things that he wants more than anything in the world. Only two. Not because he wants to be annoyingly cryptic, but because he himself doesn’t even know.

All right, fine… here’s what I want. The third thing.

I want Lyga to tell everyone my name. There’s one time in the book when Mom calls me Donnie and that’s it. People read three hundred pages about me and they’re thinking of me as Donnie? And everyone else just calls me Fanboy. I swear to God, I’m not sure which is worse. Even the guys on The List got full names. I’m the main character. Can’t I get the same respect as the Jock Jerks?

I think all Fanboy wants is a normal life. Everyday in school is the worst day of his life. He wonders how it feels to be a normal kid. No one judging you, everyone smiling at you, being yourself and people accepting who you are. He’s been through so much suffering, he lost hope in his heart, and it just made him think that if he meets new people, they would all be the same and they would judge him. Almost all his life, he’s been wishing that he would fit in, and up until now, he still hasn’t.

Fanboy asks his mother if he can feel her stomach. Up until this point, he hasn’t been supportive of her pregnancy or her marriage. This maturity may be the step to a more responsible Fanboy.The comic book and computer are just things — that the friendships and relationships he has are far more important than anything he could buy or barter for. He won’t tell the third thing because he still doesn’t understand it. Fanboy longs for companionship, he feels something that he likes, he feels something good when he is with Kyra. He feels something different, but he still isn’t quite sure what it is.

I think Fanboy’s third thing is to have a real friend. Because in the book I felt that Fanboy though a little annoyed with Kyra loved hanging out with her.

Although Fanboy has Cal, I believe what he wants more than anything in the world, would be a true best friend. Maybe he doesn’t realize it, but I think he really wants someone like Kiara. There are things he doesn’t like about her, but he has a lot of fun with her, and trusts her. I think he just wants someone to hang-out with, and be able to cry in front of too. Someone that understands him, and likes him for who he is. Overall, just a best friend to be there for him. A true friend.

“I just catch a glimpse at first, but it’s enough to tell me that she’s gorgeous.” Throughout the book, Fanboy fantasizes about girls. Which leads me to think he wants a girlfriend. “I’m alone, of course, with Dina nowhere to be seen.” He dreams about making love to her. Fanboy wants it to be real. It could happen, if he gets a girlfriend like Dina. Would he be less of a “freak”? Will Cal be more comfortable to speak to him at school? Maybe, his dad and him could have another one of their talks… When it happens.

He definitely wants to be respected. He wants people to at least listen to him and respect his opinions. Along with heat vision, but who doesn’t want that?

Fanboy wants respect. He wants to be able to walk around campus without being punched in the arm or knocked around in the hallways. He tries to gain it one way by writing a comic book and gaining fame, but when he sees Bendis and his cronies, he realizes that cliques don%u2019t stop after high school. He realizes that he must learn how to fight back. With the help of Kyra and Dina, he gains the confidence to use his mastermind skills and fight back nonviolently so that he can walk around school with his head held high.
