"Here is a novel that contains both the hopeful resilience of childhood and the shadow of despair. It takes graphic novels seriously as an art form and gives no easy answers. What a find."

Crazy from the Heat: Barry Visits Arizona

Barry went to Arizona recently to speak in schools about Fanboy and Goth Girl, and also to see friends. He’s got some pictures and reminiscences on his personal website:

Just finished your book – didn’t realise I’d be in for an all-nighter when I opened it. I’ve been sprawling all over the place, playing one-handed piano while I read, trying to open the sugar jar to make coffee without putting down the book (I had to clutch it under my chin).
I can’t tell if I think fanboy was cliche or not (perhaps archetypical?), but the story just felt so right, so necessary. So vital. I loved how each character was a real, messy, misunderstood person. That fanboy’s observations could be so true and yet so misleading.
…I rather think I should sleep now. I have class today.
